Seven Good Things
In lieu of anything meaningful to post, I'll simply list some things that have made me smile in the past week.
1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Hoo, baby. I'd wondered how they were going to adapt this one, as it was such a vast, sprawling, and epic tale - really four books in one. But adapt they did, and to great effect. Plus, Gary Oldman, Ralph Fiennes, Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith (not to mention the three ever-alluring leads) in the same film? Not since Love Actually have so many favourites shared the screen.
2. Speaking of Love Actually, I bought it last night, and it is fantastic. I make no apologies. It's a fuzzy, twee, treacly cream puff of a movie, and I friggin' love it.
3. Sticking with films, we rented Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events last weekend. It's deliciously twisted, and the kid playing Violet looks like a Victorian porcelain doll.
4. Snow. It's still novel. On Wednesday night, I walked home from work, and the snow was floofing down like talcum powder. It was dark, and other than a single streetcar on Roncesvalles, all was silent. The first snowfall of the year makes everything appear so calm and peaceful - it's no wonder so many people consider it so inspiring.
5. To that end, the soundtrack to "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Every friggin' year, it gets me. Vince Guaraldi's jazzy version of Little Drummer Boy provides the perfect soundtrack to a cold, blustery day with hot chocolate and cookies.
6. Brownies. I've learned to make them from scratch, with real cocoa. And they're fantastic.
7. Small newspapers. I spent today in a studio on Richmond, copy editing a small community paper with an editor, publisher, and layout guy. We created dirty mock-headlines, joked about trapped children, and sang along to Kenny Rogers. It was informal and relaxed and ridiculously fun. Would that all my editorial experiences could be like that!
Now, to curl up with some wine and watch schloppy love tales with the roomie. Life is good this Friday eve!
