In praise of short naked gold men with swords

Ah, another year, another wonderful Oscar night.

Many people have faulted this year's show, for a number of spurious reasons, but I thought it was splendid. Jon-boy was charming, clever, and wine-snortingly funny. The montage of Western homoeroticism was unexpected and irreverant, and his Spielberg-Jew-trilogy barb was pure gold. Not bad for the fourth male lead from Death To Smoochy.

Other highlights:

* Stephen Colbert and Rob Corddry making voice-over cameos for the hilarious smear campaign commercials. The Judi Dench one, in particular, was hilarious.

* George Clooney bringing more dash than ought to be contained in one person.

* Actually, all the Actor/Actress acceptance speeches were well-crafted. That's a rarity, and it was a nice surprise. There's something very annoying about seeing an actor whose poise and composure you usually respect degenerating into a blubbering idiot.

* Salma Hayek was the best dressed of the evening, hands-down. That blue dress was the stuff of dreams. Almost - ALMOST! - tops Cate Blanchett's stunning yellow gown from last year.

* Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin drew the biggest (and most impressive) laughs of the night for their wickedly clever introduction of Robert Altman.

We watched the whole shebag from our living room, with six people crammed onto our tiny sectional couch drinking wine and Tullamore Dew. Most entertaining.

  • Agreed on all accounts! A friend with whom I watched Sunday's Oscar funfest tried to tell me that Salma looked lopsided in that dress and her hair was bad....It has angered me to no end, I'm glad to know someone agrees with me. She was stunning and the dress had a classic originality about it
