Reasons 71 through 80 (Canuckified!)

71. Canada legalized same-sex marriage.
72. NHL hockey returned, finally filling the intangible void of Saturday nights last winter (the lockout WOULD coincide with the year I only got CBC on my television... and as oddly appealing as Ron McLean is, Movie Night in Canada just plain sucked).
73. Further to #72, my favourite team (the Ottawa Senators) are really, really, frighteningly good this season. Yeah, you heard me, millions of Leafs fans surrounding me right now!
74. Maclean's magazine celebrated its 100th anniversary. In the magazine industry, that's increasingly rare.
75. Parliament almost dissolved in May, and Belinda crossed the floor, and Peter MacKay cried to his dog, and the whole disgraceful thing made for some really entertaining news.
76. Parliament DID dissolve in November. While this election is certainly annoying and likely fruitless, it sure is fun to see those four white guys get all puffy-faced and angry about one another.
77. Canada kind of kicked ass on the world scene this year, helping out with Tsunami relief (well, eventually), hosting a massive Live 8 concert and arriving among the first to clean up the aftermath of Katrina aftermath. I mean, I know a lot of other countries did these things too, but it's still worthy of commendation.
78. Justin Trudeau got married. While normally this would make my heart sink a wee bit, he did so in a friggin' gold tuxedo. Awesome.
79. We got a new governor general, and she's kind of a loose canon. It's about time. The Royal Family had far too long been represented in Canada by prim and proper people. Isn't it nice to have someone in the position who actually reflects the erratic behaviour of the Windsors?
80. Stephen Lewis continued on his one-man ambush of public awareness, releasing a book and delivering a truly compelling series of Massey lectures on the AIDS pandemic in Africa. We (and the world) are lucky to have him.
