I think I'll start travelling by horse and buggy

This past week marked my first-ever out-of-country (or out-of-province, for that matter) business trip. I was pretty excited about the whole thing--after all, I was getting a few days out of the office, a free trip to warm warm Savannah Georgia, and loads of free "please write good things about us" swag.

Savannah itself was gorgeous, fully living up to its deliciously devilish Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil charm. The junket was fun, and the mansion (yes, mansion) they put us up in was impressive.

Less impressive was the trip to and from this fair city. I don't want to waste this space with a vitriolic rant about airports and airlines, lest I devolve into the realm of the cliched, but boy howdy, it was handled poorly. Delays, uncalled flights, unscheduled transfers, delays, cancelled flights, a wonderful accommodation offer on the airport's cold marble floors, delays, surly staff, untrained staff, indifferent staff, a bar that closed laughably early. I'm generally not one to complain about some of these things, but it was a truly rotten travel experience, and what are blogs for but to vent?

In short: Savannah was awesome. Highly recommended. United Express Airline and Washington Dulles airport? Not so much.

  • I'm not surprised. I've seen Die Hard 2 and Dulles airport is notoriously terrible at handling crises.

Obviously the meddling hand of Dennis Franz looms large still.
