I think I may be becoming a gearwhore

As I write, I've got less than two days to go until I fly out to the Canadian equivalent of Timbuktu.

Getting to the Nahanni River is going to be a bit of a trip in itself. I fly to Edmonton, then Calgary, then up to Yellowknife, then to Fort Simpson, then via charter floatplane to a tiny village of 100 called Nahanni Butte, then a big ol' water taxi trip to the river's head. All this to spend ten days lifting, paddling, hiking, climbing, and generally working my little heiney off.

I can't freakin' wait.

Weird as it may be, part of the fun has been packing. I've been a bit of a MEC regular of late, and I've accumulated a nice little mountain of gear, including a Swiss Army knife, shammy towel, waterproof hat, sunglasses, gloves, boots, mosquito jacket, sandals and an alarming reserve of neoprene.

It's funny. I used to think all this stuff was geeky (hellooooo, headlamp!) but now I kind of love it. It's an addiction. As I drool over my MEC catalogue, I'm consumed by a desire for more. More neoprene! More Gore-Tex! Yes, yes, more LED-based illumination!

*Ahem*. Hey, go easy on me. We all have our hobbies.

  • Alright. so its been years since we've chatted about anything - but even after reading your blog, no idea why exactly you are going to the middle of nowhere to muck about. (but also jealous).

    please help make me understand.
